the problem with contemporary archeology
is that you can always find what you're looking for
in the strata of dirty laundry, subscription notices, never quite unpacked boxes
without even crossing into foreign and illegal territory

better to dig through Pompeii's dirty laundry, I think
pray that our own pasts to be excavated by someone else far away
to be misinterpreted by someone removed
